What it is

An electromagnetic pelvic floor chair uses pulsed electromagnetic energy to stimulate pelvic floor muscle contractions while you remain clothed.

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles supporting the bladder, bowel and reproductive organs. A chair session aims to create repeated contractions without the person having to perform each contraction voluntarily. The equipment and settings vary, so the treatment plan should be matched to your symptoms and medical history.

How it is used

A clinician first checks the reason for treatment and asks about symptoms, pregnancy, implanted devices, recent procedures and relevant medical conditions. During a session, the device is adjusted to a tolerable intensity. You may feel rhythmic tightening, vibration or tapping in the pelvic area as the muscles contract.

Sessions are usually arranged as a course rather than a single diagnostic test. A clinician may combine chair treatment with pelvic floor exercises, breathing practice or bladder and bowel advice so that muscle activation transfers into daily activities.

Limits of the technology

The chair does not identify the cause of pelvic pain, leakage, constipation or sexual discomfort. It also cannot replace an examination when symptoms may relate to infection, prolapse, nerve problems, medication effects or another condition.

Muscle stimulation is only one part of pelvic floor rehabilitation. Benefits may differ between people, and symptoms can return if the underlying trigger or muscle coordination problem is not addressed. Ask what outcome will be measured and when the plan will be reviewed.

Alternatives and additions

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can assess strength, relaxation, coordination and movement patterns, then teach exercises tailored to you. A clinician may recommend supervised training, home exercises, changes to fluid or toilet habits, or treatment for a contributing condition. The appropriate option depends on the symptom rather than the machine alone.

What it means for a patient

This is a non-surgical treatment appointment in which you remain seated and clothed, but it still requires a proper health screen. Tell the clinician if stimulation causes pain, unusual weakness, worsening symptoms or persistent discomfort. Clarify the intended goal, the number and spacing of visits, other exercises to do, and how progress will be judged.

Safety questions

Before treatment, disclose pregnancy or possible pregnancy, implanted electronic or metal devices, recent pelvic surgery, unexplained bleeding, active infection and significant pelvic pain. The clinician can decide whether the chair is suitable or whether assessment should come first. Stop and seek advice if you develop severe pain, bleeding, faintness or new loss of bladder or bowel control.

Questions people ask

Can I stay dressed during a chair session?

The chair is designed for seated treatment while clothed, although the provider will explain any preparation needed.

Does the chair replace pelvic floor exercises?

No. A clinician may use stimulation alongside tailored exercises and rehabilitation rather than treating it as a complete substitute.
