Arthroscope

An arthroscope is a slender instrument with a camera and light. During arthroscopic surgery, it passes through a small incision into a joint space, while a screen displays magnified images for the surgical team. An arthroscope is a small camera that lets a surgeon view the inside of a joint through a small surgical opening. Other instruments can enter through separate openings to treat selected problems.

The surgeon first positions and prepares the joint, then makes access points and introduces the scope. Fluid may be used to expand and clear the joint space. The surgeon inspects cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and other structures relevant to the problem before using instruments if treatment is planned. Arthroscopy is used in several joints, including the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, and elbow.

The camera gives a view of the joint, but it cannot show every source of pain and cannot guarantee that a finding explains all symptoms. Arthroscopy is still surgery, with decisions shaped by the joint problem, medical history, and imaging. Some conditions are better managed without an operation, while others require a different approach. Recovery also varies with the procedure performed and the tissue treated.

Depending on the joint, a surgeon may discuss physiotherapy, activity modification, medication, injections, open surgery, or observation. If arthroscopy is proposed, ask which joint structure the surgeon expects to inspect or treat, what the procedure may change, and what movement or weight-bearing limits will apply afterward. A small skin opening does not mean the internal recovery is brief; repaired tissue may need protection while it heals. Your rehabilitation plan may include exercises, wound care, and a staged return to activity.

Before surgery, the team reviews anaesthesia, medicines, allergies, and joint-specific risks. Afterward, follow instructions for dressings, exercises, and weight-bearing. Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening swelling, severe pain, or new numbness. Urgent assessment is needed for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, or a cold, pale limb.
