What 3D motion capture is
3D motion capture uses cameras or other sensors to track marked or identifiable points on the body as you move. Software turns the captured positions into measurements of movement, timing and coordination. A session may include standing, walking, changing direction or repeating a task that brings on symptoms. It creates a movement record, not a direct picture of pain, muscle quality or internal tissue.
3D motion capture tracks movement through space to help clinicians examine walking, loading and joint coordination.
The clinician chooses the task and interprets the recording in context. A movement difference can be a useful observation, but it is not automatically an injury or a reason for treatment.
How it is used in assessment
Markers or sensors are placed according to the system, and you perform agreed movements while cameras record. The clinician may repeat a task after changing footwear, technique or a physical cue. Findings can contribute to a Biomechanical Assessment or Gait Analysis, alongside history, strength, joint movement and symptom behaviour. The purpose is to connect a measurable movement pattern with a practical question, such as why a task is difficult or how to guide rehabilitation.
Limits of 3D motion capture
Recorded movement depends on the task, footwear, surface, fatigue and how naturally you move in a clinic. Skin movement, loose clothing or sensor placement can affect measurements. A laboratory pattern may not represent every real-world activity. Motion capture cannot by itself identify the source of pain, prove that a movement is harmful or predict treatment results. The clinician must combine it with examination and your account of symptoms.
Other assessment options
Alternatives or companions include a hands-on examination, video review, direct gait observation, strength and flexibility tests, pressure measurement and selected imaging. Each method examines a different part of movement or body structure. The least complex useful assessment may be enough for the clinical question.
What the findings mean for you
A useful report should explain which movement was measured, what pattern was seen and whether it changes your plan. Ask how the finding relates to your symptoms and which exercise, footwear change or technique adjustment follows from it. Progress is judged through comfort, function and control over time, not through a measurement alone.
Safety and comfort
Motion capture is non-invasive, but the requested tasks may briefly reproduce familiar symptoms or cause fatigue. Tell the clinician about pain, dizziness, balance concerns or fear of falling before recording starts. You should be able to pause between trials and stop a task that feels unsafe.

Questions people ask
Do I need to prepare for 3D motion capture?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement and tell the clinician about painful or unsafe tasks before the session begins.
Does motion capture show why I am in pain?
It can describe movement patterns, but it cannot identify a pain source by itself; clinical context remains necessary.
