Skin Lumps: What They Can Feel Like and When to Get Checked

Skin lumps can arise in or beneath the skin, and a new, changing, painful, or bleeding lump deserves medical assessment.

A lump may be soft and movable, firm and fixed in place, smooth, rough, skin-coloured, red, or darker than nearby skin. Some are tender only when pressed; others itch, catch on clothing, leak material, or have no sensation at all. Note when you first noticed it and whether its surface, size, colour, or tenderness has changed.

Arrange prompt medical care for a lump that is rapidly enlarging, very painful, warm with spreading redness, draining pus, ulcerated, bleeding without a clear injury, or accompanied by fever or feeling unwell. A lump that does not settle or repeatedly returns should also be examined. Seek urgent help if swelling affects breathing, swallowing, or the area around an eye.

Different conditions can produce a lump, so appearance and location matter. The examples below are listed alphabetically, not as a ranking of what is causing a particular lump.

A clinician will ask about timing, growth, injury, infection, skin products, previous lumps, and family history. Examination considers the lump's borders, depth, movement, surface and nearby lymph nodes. Depending on the finding, assessment may include a skin examination with magnification, imaging to clarify a deeper lump, a swab if there is drainage, or removal of a small sample for laboratory examination.

Care is matched to the diagnosis. A boil may need warm compresses, medicines, or drainage when pus is trapped. A cyst, lipoma, or bothersome dermatofibroma may be monitored or removed when clinically appropriate. Keloid scars can be managed with approaches that may include pressure, silicone-based scar care, or steroid injection into the skin. Suspicious lesions need timely specialist assessment and treatment planning.

Not every lump can be prevented. Avoid squeezing, cutting, or piercing a lump at home because this can cause bleeding, scarring, or infection. Protect healing wounds from friction, keep shared personal items such as razors separate, and use sun protection on exposed skin. If a lump has been assessed, follow the care plan for wound care and follow-up.

Tell the clinician about redness, warmth, discharge, itch, tenderness, a central pore, a change after shaving, or a lump under a scar. Also mention numbness, tingling, a wound that will not heal, or skin changes elsewhere. A photo taken when the lump first changed can be useful if its appearance varies.

Many lumps can be managed conservatively once their cause is clear. Others need treatment to control infection, relieve discomfort, address scarring, or investigate a persistent lesion. Avoiding self-treatment preserves the skin for an accurate examination and can reduce unnecessary complications.
