What reduced range of motion feels like
You may notice that a shoulder will not reach overhead, a knee will not bend fully, or a finger will not straighten. Movement can feel stiff, tight, painful, weak, or blocked. Some people notice the restriction after rest; others find it during a particular task such as dressing, climbing stairs, or gripping. The limitation may affect one joint or several areas.
Is reduced movement urgent?
Arrange prompt medical assessment after a significant injury, sudden loss of movement, visible deformity, marked swelling, fever, or a hot and red joint. Seek urgent help if the restriction occurs with new numbness, severe weakness, or a change in limb colour. Without these warning signs, book an assessment if the limitation persists, worsens, or interferes with daily activities.
Possible causes
The causes below are listed alphabetically, not as a likelihood ranking. Ankylosing Spondylitis can stiffen the spine and nearby joints through inflammation. Dupuytren's Contracture causes thickened tissue in the palm that gradually pulls one or more fingers toward the hand. Frozen Shoulder may make shoulder movement increasingly restricted and uncomfortable. Osteoarthritis can change the joint surfaces and surrounding tissues, leading to stiffness and reduced movement.
How clinicians assess it
A clinician compares active movement, when you move the joint yourself, with passive movement, when the clinician supports it. They check pain location, strength, swelling, sensation, posture, and how the problem began. Depending on the findings, an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI may help examine bone, joint surfaces, tendons, or other soft tissues. The pattern of restriction helps guide the next step.
Treatment depends on the cause
Care is matched to the tissue and the reason movement is limited. Physiotherapy may use graded exercises, mobility work, strengthening, and advice about daily tasks. Osteoarthritis care may combine activity adjustment, pain management, and joint exercises. Frozen Shoulder often needs a gradual mobility programme. A finger contracture may require hand therapy or a specialist review. Inflammatory spinal stiffness needs assessment and condition-specific treatment.
Protecting your movement
Keep joints moving within a comfortable range and build activity gradually after a period of rest. Alternate demanding tasks, use sensible lifting technique, and take breaks from fixed postures. Strengthening the muscles around a joint can improve control. After an injury or procedure, follow the planned rehabilitation rather than forcing a painful stretch. Early advice is useful when stiffness starts changing work, sleep, or self-care.
Symptoms that may occur with it
Reduced movement may occur alongside pain, tenderness, swelling, clicking, weakness, muscle tightness, numbness, or morning stiffness. The combination matters: numbness or weakness can point toward nerve involvement, while warmth and swelling may suggest inflammation or injury.
What to do next
Track which movements are limited, when symptoms began, and whether rest or activity changes them. A clinician or physiotherapist can measure the movement and identify a safe starting point for rehabilitation. If the restriction continues despite sensible self-care, assessment can help prevent compensation patterns and loss of function.

Questions people ask
Can pain alone reduce range of motion?
Yes. Pain can make muscles guard a joint, so movement becomes smaller even when the joint itself is not fully blocked.
Should I force a stiff joint to move?
Avoid forcing sharp or escalating pain. Gentle, regular movement within a tolerable range is safer until the cause has been assessed.
