What leaking urine can feel like
Leaking urine can result from bladder signals, pelvic-floor support or pressure changes, and the pattern guides assessment.
Leakage may happen with coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting or exercise. You may also feel a sudden urge and leak before reaching the toilet, pass urine frequently, wake at night, or dribble after urinating. Note when leaks happen, how urgent the sensation is, drinks, constipation, childbirth history and how much it affects daily activities.
Is this urgent?
Seek urgent care for inability to pass urine with painful bladder pressure, blood in the urine, fever with back or side pain, or new loss of bladder control with leg weakness or numbness. Arrange a prompt appointment for painful urination, repeated infections, or leakage that begins suddenly. Otherwise, routine assessment is worthwhile because leakage is treatable and does not need to be accepted as normal.
Possible causes
The causes are listed alphabetically, not as a likelihood ranking. Overactive Bladder can produce urgency, frequent urination and leakage before the toilet. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction may affect the muscles that support the bladder or control its outlet. Pelvic Organ Prolapse can alter bladder emptying or create pressure and leakage. Stress Urinary Incontinence occurs when pressure from movement or coughing overwhelms the closing support around the urethra.
How clinicians assess leakage
Assessment usually starts with questions about timing, urgency, fluid intake, bowel symptoms, pregnancy and pelvic procedures. You may be asked to keep a bladder diary. A urine test can check for infection or blood. Clinicians may examine pelvic-floor strength and look for prolapse; bladder scanning or other tests may be used when emptying is uncertain or treatment has not helped.
Treatment is matched to the pattern
Bladder Training can gradually change urgency and toilet habits. Pelvic Floor Exercises may improve support when practised correctly and consistently. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy provides individual assessment, muscle coordination work and advice. Postnatal Physiotherapy can tailor recovery after pregnancy and birth. A Mid-Urethral Sling may be discussed for selected stress leakage when conservative care is unsuitable or insufficient. Prolapse or overactive-bladder care may need a different plan.
Habits that may reduce leaks
Avoid holding urine for very long periods, treat constipation, drink steadily rather than restricting fluids, and notice whether caffeine or fizzy drinks worsen urgency. Strengthen pelvic-floor muscles with guidance, especially after birth or pelvic surgery. Seek help for recurrent urinary symptoms instead of repeatedly self-treating them.
Other symptoms to mention
Tell a clinician about burning, blood, fever, pelvic pressure, a vaginal bulge, difficulty emptying, constipation, pain with sex or repeated urinary infections. These symptoms can change which examinations and tests are appropriate.
Why follow-up can help
Leaving leaks untreated may lead to avoidance of activity, skin irritation, disrupted sleep or reduced confidence. A clear diagnosis can open a stepwise plan, from bladder and pelvic-floor strategies to specialist treatment when needed. Review progress if symptoms persist or change.

Questions people ask
Is leaking urine after childbirth common?
Pelvic tissues and muscles can be affected by pregnancy and birth, so postnatal assessment can identify exercises or rehabilitation suited to your recovery.
Should I drink less to prevent leaks?
Restricting fluids can irritate the bladder and worsen constipation; drink steadily and discuss persistent urgency or leakage with a clinician.
