Itchy Eyes

Itchy eyes can result from irritation, dryness or allergy and deserve prompt assessment when vision changes or severe pain occurs.

The sensation may affect one or both eyes and can come with rubbing, watering, burning, grittiness or redness. Some people notice swollen eyelids, stringy discharge, a blocked or runny nose, or symptoms that appear after particular indoor or outdoor exposures. Repeated rubbing can make the surface feel more irritated.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden loss or marked change of vision, severe eye pain, a chemical splash, an injury, marked light sensitivity, or a very red eye with headache or nausea. A contact-lens wearer with a painful red eye should be assessed promptly. Arrange a clinical review when discharge is thick, eyelids are very swollen, symptoms persist, or an eye problem is interfering with daily activities.

Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itchiness with tearing and redness after exposure to an allergen. Allergic rhinitis may accompany eye symptoms with sneezing or nasal irritation. Wash hands before touching your eyes, remove eye makeup gently, and avoid rubbing. Keep contact lenses and their cases clean as instructed, and do not wear lenses when the eye is painful or very red. For recurring environmental symptoms, note locations, pets, cleaning tasks and seasonal patterns; this record can help identify a practical avoidance plan.

Mention nasal congestion, sneezing, cough, wheeze, rash, eyelid swelling, discharge, dry mouth, joint symptoms, or new medicines.
