What foot itching feels like
Foot itching can come from infection, irritation or eczema, so the appearance, location and recent exposures guide treatment.
Itching may be focused between the toes, across the sole, or on the top of the foot. You might notice scaling, peeling, tiny fluid-filled blisters, redness, cracks or burning. Heat, sweating, enclosed shoes and scratching can intensify discomfort and damage the skin barrier.
Is itchy feet urgent?
Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, swelling, pus, fever, severe pain, red streaking or difficulty walking. People with diabetes, poor circulation or reduced immunity should arrange medical advice sooner when cracks or sores appear. Otherwise, persistent or recurring itch merits a routine skin assessment.
Possible causes
These causes are alphabetised rather than ranked. The same itch can look different from person to person, and more than one factor can irritate the feet.
How clinicians find the cause
The clinician inspects the spaces between the toes, soles, nails and shoe-contact areas. They ask about sweating, shared floors, new socks or products, previous rashes and whether anyone close to you has similar symptoms. If infection is uncertain, a skin sample may be examined; eczema and irritation are often assessed from the pattern and history.
Treatment by cause
Treatment follows the diagnosis. [Athlete's Foot](/conditions/athletes-foot/) may need an antifungal plan and careful drying. Irritant or allergic [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/) improves when the trigger is identified and avoided. [Dyshidrotic Eczema](/conditions/dyshidrotic-eczema/) may need barrier care and anti-inflammatory treatment prescribed for the flare. [Topical Antifungal Treatment](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-antifungal-therapy/) is not useful for every itchy rash, so avoid treating an uncertain diagnosis repeatedly.
Reducing future foot itch
Wash and dry carefully, especially between the toes. Change damp socks, let shoes dry between uses, wear breathable footwear and use personal towels. Avoid sharing footwear and do not scratch open areas. If a product repeatedly causes a rash, keep its name or ingredients for the next consultation.
Symptoms that may accompany the itch
Scaling, peeling, redness, blisters, fissures, soreness, odour or nail changes can provide useful clues. Note whether the rash is on one foot or both and whether it follows sweating, footwear or a new product.
When to get a skin review
Arrange a review if home care does not settle the itch, if it keeps returning or if the diagnosis is unclear. Bring a list of products and medicines, and mention any diabetes or circulation concerns so the clinician can choose safe care.

Questions people ask
Why does foot itching worsen in shoes?
Warmth and trapped moisture can irritate the skin and support conditions that cause scaling or inflammation.
Should I use an antifungal for any itchy foot rash?
No. Eczema and contact reactions can itch in a similar way, so an uncertain or persistent rash should be assessed.
