Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA): Uses in Skin Treatments

Trichloroacetic acid is a clinician-applied chemical used to create controlled skin renewal in selected aesthetic treatments. Often called TCA, it is placed on the skin in a planned pattern so the outer layers can shed and repair. It is not a home-use exfoliant: the choice of strength, amount and placement affects how deeply the skin responds.

TCA causes proteins in the treated skin to coagulate, which may produce a temporary pale or frosted appearance during application. The visible response helps the clinician judge the treatment area. In the days afterwards, treated skin can feel tight, become darker or crusted, and peel as new surface skin forms.

Its effect depends on the formulation and technique, as well as the thickness and condition of the skin. A broader application is approached differently from a tiny application inside a depressed scar.

In a chemical peel, TCA may be applied across a selected area to improve uneven texture, dullness or pigment irregularity. In TCA CROSS, a clinician deposits a small amount directly into certain indented acne scars rather than treating the surrounding skin broadly. The treatment plan should match the concern, skin tone, previous procedures and ability to follow aftercare.

TCA is one option among several resurfacing approaches. Depending on the concern, a clinician may discuss other peel ingredients, microneedling, laser-based resurfacing or scar-focused procedures. For active acne, controlling new breakouts may be considered before concentrating on old scar texture. Combining procedures is sometimes planned in stages so the skin can recover between treatments.

Before treatment, tell the clinician about recent sun exposure, cold sores, skin infections, eczema in the intended area, medicines and any previous pigment changes after irritation. They can assess whether TCA suits the area and whether a full-face peel or targeted technique makes more sense. Do not pick, scrub or pull peeling skin; this can increase irritation and uneven healing.

Changes develop as the treated skin heals, rather than immediately after application. The duration of improvement varies with the original concern, the treatment technique, sun exposure and ongoing skin care. Possible unwanted effects include prolonged redness, infection, scarring and lighter or darker areas of pigment, particularly if the product reaches unintended skin or aftercare is not followed. Seek prompt clinical advice for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, blisters or a wound that is not healing as expected.
