Imiquimod: uses and patient information

Imiquimod is a prescription topical medicine that stimulates local immune activity to treat selected skin conditions.

It is applied to skin rather than taken by mouth. A clinician chooses it when the condition, treatment area, and your medical history make this approach suitable. The brand name Aldara may also be used for an imiquimod product.

The medicine encourages an immune response in the treated skin. That response can make the area look inflamed while treatment is underway, which is different from simply covering or removing a surface change.

Its effect is local, so correct placement and the prescribed amount matter. Do not spread it beyond the area your clinician has identified unless you have been told to do so.

Clinicians may use imiquimod for selected superficial skin conditions, including certain viral skin lesions and some sun-related precancerous changes. It is not a general cream for every rash, bump, or mark.

The diagnosis needs to be clear before starting. A lesion that is bleeding, changing rapidly, repeatedly crusting, or not healing deserves clinical assessment rather than self-treatment with a leftover cream.

Depending on the condition, alternatives can include observation, a procedure performed in clinic, freezing treatment, another topical medicine, or removal followed by laboratory examination. The choice depends on the diagnosis, exact location, size, skin sensitivity, and whether a sample is needed.

Your clinician should show you the intended application area and tell you when to apply and wash off the cream, if washing off is part of your plan. Wash your hands before and after application unless your hands are the treatment site.

Local redness, burning, itching, dryness, swelling, or peeling can develop. Contact the prescribing clinician if the reaction is severe, spreads well beyond the treatment area, or you develop symptoms that concern you.

Use imiquimod only as prescribed and keep it away from eyes, lips, and other sensitive areas unless your clinician specifically directs otherwise. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, breastfeeding, immune conditions, and other medicines or skin products you use.
