Fluconazole: what it is and when it is used

Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat certain yeast and other fungal infections.

It belongs to a group of medicines that interfere with the fungal cell membrane, stopping the fungus from growing and helping the body clear the infection. In women’s health, it may be prescribed for vaginal thrush when an oral antifungal is appropriate. Thrush symptoms can overlap with other vaginal conditions, so the correct diagnosis matters before treatment.

Fluconazole is taken by mouth in a form selected by a clinician or pharmacist. The dose and timing depend on the infection, its severity, medical history and the formulation. It can interact with other medicines, including some that affect the heart rhythm, liver or blood clotting. Nausea, stomach discomfort, headache or skin reactions can occur; a widespread or blistering rash needs urgent assessment.

Fluconazole can be used for selected yeast infections, including some cases of vaginal thrush, as well as certain fungal infections elsewhere in the body. It is not an antibiotic and does not treat bacterial vaginal infections. If symptoms do not improve, return after treatment, or include unusual discharge, pelvic pain, fever or sores, arrange a clinical assessment rather than repeating doses yourself.

For vaginal thrush, a clinician may consider a local antifungal cream or pessary instead of an oral medicine. The choice depends on pregnancy status, symptoms, interactions, previous episodes and whether the infection is confirmed. Avoid using leftover treatment for a new episode without advice, particularly when symptoms are unusual or persistent.

Take fluconazole only in the way supplied or prescribed, and complete the directed course when one is given. Check with a pharmacist before combining it with regular medicines or supplements. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fainting, or a severe skin reaction. Vaginal thrush is not established by itching alone, because irritation has several possible causes.

Arrange review if symptoms remain after the expected treatment period, recur, or are accompanied by pelvic pain, fever, bleeding or a strong-smelling discharge. Repeated episodes may need confirmation and a tailored plan. Keep fluconazole away from children, follow storage instructions on the pack and do not give your medicine to someone with similar symptoms.
