Deoxycholic Acid: How Fat-Dissolving Injections Work

Deoxycholic acid is a bile-acid substance that helps break down dietary fat in the digestive system. In aesthetic medicine, it is formulated for injection into selected pockets of fat beneath the skin. It is also known by brand names such as Kybella or Belkyra in some markets. Treatment should be planned by a qualified clinician who understands the relevant anatomy.

Deoxycholic acid is an injectable substance that breaks down localised subcutaneous fat so the body can gradually clear cell remnants.

The substance acts locally on fat-cell membranes. The treated area commonly becomes swollen, tender or bruised while the body processes the affected tissue. Because injection depth and placement matter, the product is not suitable for casual home use. It is intended for selected contours rather than broad weight reduction, and it cannot tighten loose skin or correct every cause of a fullness concern.

Clinicians most often consider deoxycholic acid for a small, localised area of unwanted fullness, commonly beneath the chin when the tissue and skin quality are suitable. Common short-term effects include swelling, bruising, numbness and tenderness. Rare but serious problems can follow incorrect placement, including nerve injury or tissue damage, which is why a trained injector and an anatomy-based plan matter.
