What ceramides are

Ceramides are fats, also called lipids, found naturally in the outer layer of skin. They sit between skin cells and help form the organised barrier that reduces water loss. Skin can contain less effective barrier lipids when it is dry, irritated, inflamed, or repeatedly exposed to harsh cleansing or friction.

Skincare products can add ceramides to moisturising formulas. They are often described as barrier lipids because their main role is to support the outer protective layer rather than exfoliate or peel the skin.

Key properties

Ceramides work as part of a lipid mixture with other skin components, including cholesterol and fatty acids. A well-formulated product spreads these ingredients across the skin surface and helps reduce the feeling of tightness and roughness. Ceramides are not a steroid and do not directly suppress inflammation; they support barrier care alongside treatment when inflammation is present.

Where ceramides are used

Ceramides are used in leave-on moisturisers, emollients, facial creams, body lotions, and some gentle cleansers. They may be useful on dry or sensitive areas, including the hands, face, trunk, and limbs. The right texture depends on the body site: a lighter lotion may feel comfortable on broad areas, while a richer cream or ointment may suit very dry skin.

Possible alternatives

Other moisturising ingredients include humectants such as glycerin, occlusive ingredients such as petrolatum, and emollients that smooth the spaces between rough skin cells. These options can be combined or chosen according to the skin’s dryness, climate, sensitivity, and preference. A product’s full formula matters more than a single ingredient name.

What this means for a patient

Apply a ceramide moisturiser to clean skin, preferably soon after washing while the skin is still slightly damp. Use it consistently on areas that become dry, and reapply after handwashing when needed. If a product stings, causes a rash, or worsens irritation, stop using it and discuss the reaction with a clinician; fragrance and preservatives may be responsible rather than the ceramide itself.

Longevity and safety

Barrier support depends on regular application and the cause of dryness. Improvement in comfort may develop gradually, while recurring irritation can return if the trigger continues. Ceramides are generally used as topical moisturising ingredients, but an individual formula can still irritate sensitive skin or cause contact allergy. Seek medical advice for persistent cracking, oozing, pain, or a rash that does not settle.

Questions people ask

Are ceramides moisturisers?

Ceramides are ingredients used in moisturising products; they support the barrier but are not a complete product by themselves.

Can ceramides replace prescribed eczema treatment?

They may support daily barrier care, but they do not replace a prescribed anti-inflammatory or other treatment when one is needed.
