What benzoyl peroxide is

Benzoyl peroxide is a topical acne treatment ingredient that helps reduce acne-causing bacteria and unclog pores.

It is found in leave-on gels, creams and lotions, as well as washes. A clinician may suggest it for whiteheads, blackheads and inflamed spots, either on its own or alongside another acne medicine. Its antibacterial action does not rely on an antibiotic, which can make it a useful part of an acne plan.

How it behaves on skin

Benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen within the skin surface, creating conditions that are less favourable for Cutibacterium acnes. It also has a peeling effect that can help shed cells that would otherwise collect inside pores. This same activity can cause dryness, stinging, redness or flaking, particularly when treatment begins or too much is applied.

Where it is used

The ingredient is used on acne-prone areas such as the face, chest, back or shoulders when those sites are suitable for the prescribed product. Apply it to clean, dry skin in the amount advised, rather than dabbing only on visible individual spots if your clinician has recommended treatment across an acne-prone zone. Keep it away from eyes, lips, inside the nose and broken skin.

Other approaches that may be considered

Acne management can also include a topical retinoid, azelaic acid, salicylic acid, an antibiotic used with an appropriate companion treatment, or oral medicine for selected cases. The right option depends on the type of lesions, skin sensitivity, pregnancy considerations and the areas involved. Combining active products without guidance may make irritation harder to manage.

What this means for your routine

Start exactly as advised and use a gentle cleanser and non-comedogenic moisturiser if dryness develops. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair, towels, pillowcases and clothing, so let it dry before contact with fabrics. Daytime sunscreen is helpful because irritated or peeling skin may be more uncomfortable in sun exposure. Tell your clinician if burning is persistent, swelling occurs, or a rash spreads beyond the treated area.

Use and safety

Acne treatment needs consistent use, and the schedule should follow the product instructions or your prescriber’s plan. Do not use more to try to speed clearing; extra application can increase irritation without improving the routine. Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, facial swelling or widespread hives after use. Discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding, eczema or other active skin conditions before starting a new medicated product.

Questions people ask

Can benzoyl peroxide be used with other acne products?

It can be part of a combined regimen, but the order and frequency matter because several active products can irritate skin together. Follow a clinician’s instructions for your individual combination.

Why is benzoyl peroxide making my skin peel?

Peeling can occur because the ingredient affects the outer skin layer and can be irritating. Persistent burning, marked swelling or a spreading rash needs clinical advice.
