Allograft Tendon

An allograft tendon is donor tendon tissue prepared for use in reconstructive surgery when a replacement ligament or tendon is needed. The tissue comes from another person, is screened and processed by a tissue service, then supplied for a planned procedure. It is different from an autograft, which uses tissue taken from the patient’s own body.

A tendon is strong, fibrous connective tissue designed to transmit force. Processing aims to make the graft suitable for handling and storage while preserving a useful structural scaffold. The graft does not instantly become the patient’s own living tendon; healing involves attachment, blood supply changes and gradual biological incorporation.

Allograft tendon may be used in ligament reconstruction, tendon repair or revision surgery when a suitable donor tissue is available and clinically appropriate. ACL Reconstruction is one example. The surgeon selects graft type according to the injury, previous operations, anatomy, activity goals and the condition of nearby tissues.

Alternatives include an autograft from a patient’s hamstring, patellar or quadriceps tendon, depending on the operation, or a synthetic graft in selected situations. Each option changes the balance between donor-site effects, graft handling, healing, rehabilitation and surgical suitability. The choice is made with the operating team after examining the knee and reviewing goals.

Before surgery, ask which graft is proposed, why it suits your reconstruction and what other options are reasonable. After surgery, the graft needs protection while it heals, so rehabilitation milestones may limit running, pivoting, heavy lifting or contact activity for a period set by the surgical team. Follow wound care and rehabilitation instructions closely, and report fever, increasing redness, drainage or sudden loss of function.

An allograft is selected and handled under tissue-bank procedures intended to reduce contamination and donor-related transmission risks, but no medical material is free of considerations. Possible concerns include infection, immune reaction, graft stretching or failure, and the risks of the operation itself. Long-term function depends on fixation, biological healing, rehabilitation and the demands placed on the reconstruction.
