AED 1,560 a month for Mounjaro in Dubai: what GLP-1 weight loss actually means

GLP-1 treatment in Dubai usually means one weekly injection, at least four weeks at each dose step, and a retail medicine bill of about AED 1,560.60 per pen before consultations, labs or insurance decisions.

For Dubai operators, the immediate questions are operational and financial. Dubai Health Authority (DHA) licensed clinicians must treat these medicines as prescription products, patients need monitoring beyond a scale reading, and finance teams should expect many obesity-only requests to sit outside routine reimbursement. In Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the equivalent regulator is the Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH). In Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) registration and pharmacy rules remain the first check.

What the medicine does by week and kilogram

Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and as Zepbound for weight management in the US, acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors. The practical effect is lower appetite, slower gastric emptying and better glucose response after meals. The US Food and Drug Administration said on 8 November 2023 that tirzepatide weight-management trials measured outcomes at 72 weeks.

The headline weight-loss number depends on the patient group. In the larger FDA-cited trial of adults without diabetes, patients on the highest approved tirzepatide dose lost an average 18% of body weight at 72 weeks. In adults with type 2 diabetes, the average loss at the highest dose was 12%. A patient starting at 100 kg should read those as roughly 18 kg or 12 kg averages, subject to dose tolerance, diet, activity, co-morbidities and persistence.

A current UAE retail listing from Life Pharmacy shows Mounjaro KwikPen strengths, including 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg and 15 mg, at AED 1,560.60 and marked as prescription-only. A pharmacy listing is separate from final patient cost. Clinics may bill physician reviews, dietitian visits, baseline blood tests, HbA1c, renal function, lipids and follow-up appointments.

Coverage varies by diagnosis and policy wording. A patient with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk has a different approval argument than a patient seeking weight loss alone. Dubai patients should ask the clinic to submit the exact indication and ICD code before purchase. Abu Dhabi patients covered through Daman or Thiqa should check pre-authorisation rules before the first pen is dispensed. Cash-pay patients should ask whether the quoted package includes the medicine, the prescription review and adverse-event follow-up.

What changed after the cardiovascular approval

On 28 August 2026, Lilly said the US FDA approved Mounjaro to lower major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk. The approval was based on SURPASS-CVOT, a trial of 13,299 participants across 640 sites in 30 countries, with median follow-up of 210.1 weeks. Mounjaro was non-inferior to Trulicity, with an 8% lower rate of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke, according to Lilly.

The indication applies to a defined diabetic cardiovascular-risk group. It gives medical directors a stronger evidence base for those patients. It also gives COOs a reason to tighten protocols: document BMI, diabetes status, cardiovascular history, contraindications, pregnancy status, pancreatitis history, gallbladder symptoms, renal risk and concomitant insulin or sulfonylurea use before escalation.

Supply-chain checks matter in the UAE. DHA published CIR-2024-00000191 on 21 October 2024 after a MOHAP alert on counterfeit Mounjaro packs, and DOH issued a related circular dated 25 October 2024. In July 2026, DHA also notified private facilities of Emirates Drug Establishment circulars on stolen packs of Mounjaro and Ozempic. For clinics, the action is simple: buy through licensed UAE channels, retain batch records, and tell patients that lower-price social media offers are a clinical risk.

Patients still need nutrition support. GLP-1 treatment reduces intake, while nutrition support covers protein targets, lean-mass protection, reflux and constipation. Dubai clinics should pair prescribing with a licensed dietitian pathway and track weight, waist, HbA1c where relevant, lipids and treatment tolerance.
