IUI and IVF side by side

IUI places prepared sperm in the uterus around ovulation, while IVF fertilises eggs in a laboratory before embryo transfer.

Both treatments aim to bring sperm and egg together, but they do so at different points. IUI supports fertilisation inside the body. IVF involves ovarian stimulation, egg collection, laboratory fertilisation, and transfer of an embryo to the uterus. The appropriate route depends on the fertility factors affecting one or both partners.

When IUI may be considered

IUI may be considered when at least one fallopian tube is open, ovulation can be timed or supported, and prepared sperm can be placed in the uterus. It may suit some cases of unexplained infertility, ovulation difficulties, or difficulty having intercourse. Sperm preparation and ovulation medicines may be used. IUI does not bypass blocked tubes or solve every sperm-related problem.

When IVF may be considered

IVF may be considered when the fallopian tubes are blocked or severely damaged, sperm factors are substantial, ovarian reserve is a concern, or previous treatments have not worked. It can also allow embryo testing in selected situations or preserve embryos for later use. IVF requires medication, monitoring, egg collection, laboratory work, and an embryo-transfer decision.

Risks and practical burdens

IUI can involve cramping, spotting, infection, or an unwanted multiple pregnancy when ovulation medicines stimulate more than one follicle. IVF adds injections, frequent monitoring, egg collection, sedation or anaesthesia, and the possibility of ovarian hyperstimulation. Both can bring emotional strain and may not result in pregnancy. Your clinic should explain personalised risks before treatment.

When neither is the immediate next step

Some people need fertility evaluation before choosing treatment. Assessment may identify ovulation, tube, uterine, sperm, endocrine, or timing factors that can be addressed first. Depending on age, history, and findings, options may include cycle tracking, treating an underlying condition, surgery, donor conception, fertility preservation, or continuing to try without assisted treatment.

How the recommendation is made

A fertility clinician considers how long you have been trying, menstrual and ovulation history, ovarian reserve, tube openness, semen analysis, prior pregnancies or treatments, medical conditions, and your preferences. Ask how many visits and injections are expected, what monitoring involves, how embryos are handled, and what alternatives fit your circumstances. A second opinion can be reasonable when the decision feels uncertain.

Questions people ask

Is IUI less involved than IVF?

Usually, IUI involves a simpler procedure, while IVF includes ovarian stimulation, egg collection, laboratory fertilisation, and embryo transfer. The medicines and monitoring vary.

Can a clinician recommend IVF immediately?

Yes, when findings such as blocked tubes or substantial sperm factors make IUI less suitable. The recommendation should reflect testing, history, and your preferences.
