How the symptoms differ
Excessive burping centres on repeated belching, whereas indigestion centres on uncomfortable upper-abdominal symptoms after eating.
They can occur together: swallowed air, fizzy drinks, rushed meals and chewing gum may increase belching, while a large or rich meal can leave the upper abdomen feeling overly full. The main clue is the symptom that is most troublesome and persistent.
Excessive burping fits better when
Choose excessive burping as the closer description when belching itself is the dominant problem, especially if it starts during meals, conversations or periods of anxiety. Notice whether you are swallowing air through eating quickly, drinking through a straw, smoking, chewing gum or frequently sipping fizzy drinks.
Keeping a short note of foods, drinks and timing can reveal a repeatable trigger. Slowing down at meals and avoiding carbonated drinks for a while may help distinguish an air-swallowing pattern from stomach discomfort.
Indigestion fits better when
Indigestion is the closer fit when discomfort, early fullness, burning behind the breastbone, nausea or an unpleasant taste is more prominent than the burps. Symptoms may be more noticeable after a heavy meal, alcohol, coffee, spicy food or when lying down soon after eating.
Some medicines can irritate the stomach or affect reflux. A pharmacist or clinician can review what you take, including non-prescription pain medicines, rather than stopping a prescribed medicine on your own.
Symptoms that need prompt assessment
Seek urgent medical assessment for chest pressure, shortness of breath, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, or trouble swallowing. These symptoms need assessment even when burping or indigestion is also present.
Arrange a clinical review when symptoms keep returning, are changing your eating habits, wake you from sleep, or come with unexplained weight loss, ongoing vomiting or marked tiredness.
When neither label explains the problem
A bloated abdomen, lower abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea or symptoms clearly linked to a particular food may point beyond these two descriptions. Likewise, throat symptoms, chronic cough or a sour taste can accompany reflux and deserve a fuller history.
Do not force a label if the pattern is mixed. Record when symptoms start, what you ate or drank, medicines taken and whether opening your bowels changes the discomfort; this gives a clinician useful detail.
What a clinician may consider
A clinician will usually ask about the location of discomfort, its relationship to food, reflux symptoms, bowel changes, stress, alcohol and medicines. Examination may focus on the abdomen and signs of dehydration or anaemia when the history suggests them.
Management depends on the pattern. It can include meal-timing changes, reducing relevant triggers, reviewing medicines or testing when warning symptoms or persistent symptoms make that appropriate.
Questions people ask
Can indigestion cause burping?
Yes. Fullness, reflux and bloating can occur with burping, but the dominant symptom helps describe what is bothering you most.
What can I track before an appointment?
Note meal timing, food and drink, medicines, the location of discomfort, bowel changes and any warning symptoms such as vomiting or bleeding.
