How abdominal pain and indigestion compare

Abdominal pain can occur anywhere in the belly, whereas indigestion usually causes upper abdominal discomfort related to eating or digestion.

Indigestion can include uncomfortable fullness, bloating, nausea, burping, an acid taste, or burning in the upper abdomen or behind the breastbone. Abdominal pain is broader: it can be localised or widespread and may relate to the stomach, bowel, urinary tract, reproductive organs, or another source.

When abdominal pain is the clearer description

Choose abdominal pain when discomfort is lower in the belly, occurs on one side, feels cramping or sharp, or is linked with bowel movements, passing urine, a period, or movement. Pain that starts near the navel and then moves, or pain with marked tenderness, deserves careful assessment.

The timing matters. A sudden new pain has a different clinical pattern from a familiar mild ache after a meal. Mention fever, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, urinary symptoms, vaginal bleeding, or a recent injury because these symptoms can guide the next steps.

When indigestion is the clearer description

Indigestion is a useful description when upper abdominal discomfort follows eating and comes with early fullness, bloating, burping, nausea, or a burning feeling. Some people notice it after large meals, rich foods, fizzy drinks, alcohol, or lying down soon after eating.

A simple symptom diary can identify a repeatable trigger. Note what was eaten, the time symptoms started, whether there was heartburn or regurgitation, and whether avoiding a particular food changed the pattern. Do not assume every upper abdominal symptom is indigestion when it is new, severe, or persistent.

Warning signs that should not be managed as simple indigestion

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard or very tender abdomen, vomiting blood, black stools, blood in the stool, fainting, confusion, chest pressure, trouble breathing, or sweating with discomfort. These symptoms require prompt assessment.

Book a medical review when symptoms recur, interfere with eating or sleep, or occur with ongoing vomiting, difficulty swallowing, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unexplained weight change, or a new lump or swelling. Escalation depends on the warning signs and the symptom course, not on a presumed cause.

When neither label is enough

Symptoms focused on the chest, throat, bowel habits, urine, or pelvis may need a more specific description. For example, pain with burning urination points to a urinary symptom pattern, while persistent difficulty swallowing needs separate evaluation. A precise account is more helpful than forcing several symptoms into the word indigestion.

Chest discomfort may be mistaken for indigestion. If it occurs with pressure, breathlessness, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the jaw, arm, back, or upper abdomen, seek urgent care.

How a clinician works through the symptoms

A clinician may ask where the discomfort is, its character, its relation to food, bowel activity and urination, medicines taken, and any relevant medical history. An abdominal examination helps identify tenderness, swelling, or other findings that may guide testing.

Bring a record of symptom episodes, meals, drinks, medicines, and associated symptoms. This can show whether the problem consistently follows digestion or whether the pain has a separate pattern requiring a different approach.

Questions people ask

Can indigestion include pain?

Yes. Indigestion can cause upper abdominal discomfort or burning, often alongside fullness, burping, nausea, or an acid taste. Pain elsewhere in the abdomen may need a different assessment.

When should I make an appointment for recurring indigestion?

Arrange a review when symptoms keep returning, disrupt meals or sleep, or occur with vomiting, swallowing difficulty, fever, bleeding, weight change, or jaundice.
