Zika virus symptoms and treatment

Many people with Zika virus infection have no symptoms. When illness is noticed, a blotchy or itchy rash may occur with a temperature, aching joints, headache, muscle pain, or red eyes. Symptoms overlap with other infections that can occur after travel, including dengue, so a clinician assesses your recent locations, timing of symptoms, mosquito exposure, pregnancy status, and examination findings.

Tests may be considered in selected situations. Their timing and usefulness depend on when symptoms began and the type of possible exposure.

There is no specific antiviral medicine routinely used to clear Zika. Care commonly centres on rest, fluids, and guidance on suitable medicine for pain or fever. Do not start anti-inflammatory pain medicine without advice when dengue has not been excluded, because it may not be suitable in that setting.

Prevent further mosquito bites while you are unwell by using repellent, covering skin, and using screens where possible. This is also a sensible time to avoid alcohol if it worsens dehydration or affects the medicines you use.

Arrange assessment for symptoms after travel to an area where Zika or other mosquito-borne infections may occur. Contact a clinician promptly if you are pregnant, considering pregnancy, or have a pregnant partner after possible exposure. Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, or worsening weakness.
