Short answer

Zika virus infection can cause a mild fever, often alongside rash, joint pain, red eyes, or headache.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How fever can fit with Zika

Fever is the body’s response to an infection and can have many causes. With Zika, symptoms may be mild or absent; when symptoms occur, a low-grade temperature can appear with an itchy rash, aching small joints, headache, or redness of the eyes. Those features need assessment in the context of recent travel, mosquito exposure, pregnancy, and other illnesses circulating locally.

A fever alone cannot identify Zika. Respiratory infections, skin infections, and other viral illnesses can also cause it, so the pattern of symptoms and exposure history matters.

Practical next steps

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and monitor your temperature and new symptoms. Avoid mosquito bites while unwell by using repellent, covering exposed skin, and keeping rooms screened where possible; this helps limit onward mosquito exposure. If you need pain or fever relief, a clinician or pharmacist can advise what is suitable for you, especially if dengue has not been excluded.

Tell a clinician about countries visited, dates of travel, insect bites, medicines, and whether you are pregnant or trying to conceive.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt medical advice for fever after travel to an area where mosquito-borne infections occur, particularly with rash or joint pain. Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, difficulty breathing, severe headache, repeated vomiting, dehydration, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, or a rapidly worsening condition. Pregnant people with possible exposure should contact their maternity or medical team without delay.

Questions to raise at an appointment

Ask whether your travel and symptoms make testing appropriate, whether dengue or another infection needs consideration, and which medicines are appropriate while results are pending. If pregnancy is relevant, ask about follow-up and measures to reduce mosquito and sexual transmission risks.
