The instrument has a handle, a light, and a small cone called a speculum. The clinician selects a suitable speculum, gently positions the outer ear, and looks through the canal. This can help them see wax, irritation, discharge, a foreign object, or changes to the eardrum. The view is one part of an assessment: symptoms, hearing changes, temperature, recent swimming, and any injury can all affect what the finding means.

For ear pain, blockage, discharge, or reduced hearing, arrange an assessment rather than trying to examine deeply at home. Do not push an otoscope, cotton bud, or other object into the ear canal; this can injure delicate skin or the eardrum and may push wax further in. A clinician can decide whether wax removal, treatment, hearing assessment, or observation is appropriate. Keep reusable parts clean according to the device instructions and avoid sharing tips that have not been properly cleaned.

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, swelling or redness behind the ear, blood or pus from the ear, dizziness with vomiting, or symptoms after a head injury. Children who seem unusually drowsy, have a stiff neck, are hard to comfort, or have rapidly worsening symptoms should be assessed urgently. An ear-viewing device cannot safely rule out a serious problem when these symptoms are present.

Ask what was seen in the ear canal and on the eardrum, whether wax is obscuring the view, and whether a hearing check is useful. If a child is affected, ask what changes in sleep, feeding, pain, or fever would mean they should be reviewed sooner.
