Yellow Skin and Eyes With a Bloated Stomach

Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes happens when bilirubin builds up. A larger or tight-feeling abdomen can come from fluid collecting in the abdomen, gas, constipation, an enlarged organ, or another abdominal problem. When both changes occur together, clinicians need to check how the liver is working and whether bile can drain normally.

Causes can include inflammation or infection of the liver, blockage in the bile drainage system, and other disorders affecting the liver or nearby organs. The symptoms do not identify one cause by themselves, so an examination and targeted tests matter.

Arrange urgent same-day assessment. Write down when the yellowing and swelling started, whether the abdomen is getting larger, and whether there is pain, itching, pale stools, dark urine, reduced appetite, nausea, fever, weight change, recent travel, or alcohol use. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, and herbal products. Avoid alcohol until you have been assessed.

Go to emergency care now for severe abdominal pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, vomiting blood, black stools, confusion, fever with chills, shortness of breath, fainting, or rapid worsening. These symptoms may need prompt treatment and should not be managed by waiting for a routine appointment.

Ask whether the swelling appears to be fluid, what blood tests may clarify the cause of jaundice, and whether an ultrasound or other imaging is appropriate. Ask what you should monitor at home, which medicines are safe to continue, and how quickly results and follow-up will be arranged.
