Yeast infection skin rash pictures: what to know

A rash caused by Candida can look bright red or deeper red on darker skin, with a moist or shiny surface and cracks where skin rubs together. Small spots or bumps near the main patch can occur. Similar changes may come from contact dermatitis, eczema, bacterial infection, or friction, so an image is only a visual guide.

The affected area may sting, burn, itch, or feel tender. It can occur beneath the breasts, in the groin, between skin folds, or around the vulva. Vaginal itching and vaginal discharge can have several causes; review those symptoms separately if they are present.

Gently wash the area and pat it dry. Choose loose, breathable clothing, change out of damp garments, and avoid fragranced soaps, deodorants, and scrubbing on the rash. Keep skin folds separated and dry without rubbing.

A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an antifungal product is appropriate and how it should be used. Do not put a steroid cream on a suspected fungal rash without advice, because it can alter the appearance and allow the infection to spread. Treatment for thrush may be relevant when genital symptoms are involved.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, increasingly painful, cracked, draining, foul-smelling, or not settling after appropriate care. Seek prompt help for fever, marked swelling, rapidly worsening redness, or feeling unwell. Get an examination when the diagnosis is uncertain, the rash keeps returning, or you have a condition or medicine that affects immune function.
