Yeast infection and sex pain: what to know

Thrush-related inflammation can cause itching, burning, swelling, dryness, and tiny surface cracks. Touch or penetration may then feel sore at the entrance or deeper inside. Pain during sex can also come from vaginal dryness, pelvic floor tension, skin conditions, urinary or sexually transmitted infections, or pelvic causes, so pain alone does not identify thrush. Discharge and external itching may support the picture, but they are not required.

Pause penetration while the area is sore and tell your partner what feels comfortable. Gentle washing, breathable underwear, and avoiding scented products may reduce irritation. Once symptoms have settled, take things slowly and stop if pain returns; a suitable lubricant may reduce friction. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about treatment rather than inserting products chosen only from the symptom of painful sex.

Seek an assessment if pain is new, severe, deep, recurrent, or continues after suspected thrush has improved. Prompt review is needed for fever, pelvic pain, bleeding after sex, sores or blisters, unusual discharge, or burning when passing urine. Pregnancy, recent antibiotics, diabetes, or repeated episodes should be discussed because treatment choices may differ.
