Yeast infection or ringworm on the scalp: home treatment

Vaginal thrush affects vulval or vaginal tissue; it does not explain a ring-shaped scalp rash. Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection that may cause scaling, itch, broken hairs, tender areas, or patches of hair loss. Other causes, including eczema, psoriasis, bacterial infection, or alopecia, can look similar. A clinician may inspect the scalp and hair and arrange testing before selecting treatment.

Do not share combs, brushes, hats, towels, pillows, or hair tools until the cause is known, and wash items that touch the scalp as advised. Avoid scratching, shaving over the area, or applying household remedies. Keep the scalp clean and arrange a medical appointment promptly. A clinician may recommend prescription medicine taken by mouth, with scalp treatment used as an adjunct when appropriate.

Seek prompt assessment for painful swelling, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, extensive hair loss, or a soft tender lump. Children and anyone with reduced immunity should be assessed without delay because scalp infection can affect hair follicles and spread to close contacts. Do not wait for a home cream to work when hair loss is developing.
