Yeast infection on penis skin: symptoms and care

Candida may multiply when warmth and moisture remain under the foreskin or around irritated skin. Friction, sweating, antibiotics, diabetes, and difficulty keeping the area dry can contribute. Burning during urination, unpleasant odour, small cracks, or a white coating may occur. However, soap irritation, eczema, bacterial inflammation, and sexually transmitted infections can look similar. A penile rash therefore needs a careful history and examination rather than a diagnosis based on one symptom.

Wash with lukewarm water, gently retract the foreskin only as far as comfortable, and dry carefully before replacing it. Avoid fragranced soap, deodorants, vigorous rubbing, and sex if it worsens pain or irritation. Do not force a tight foreskin forward or backward. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether antifungal treatment fits the cause; follow the directions and avoid using leftover or shared medicines.

Book an examination if symptoms are new, recurrent, painful, associated with discharge, or not improving. Testing may be useful when a sexually transmitted infection is possible or a partner has symptoms. Get urgent help if the foreskin becomes stuck behind the glans, urine cannot pass, swelling is severe, or fever and rapidly worsening redness develop.
