Yeast infection hair follicle: what to know

Folliculitis means inflammation around a hair root. A yeast-related form is more likely in sweaty, occluded areas and may produce clusters of itchy bumps rather than one deep lump. Shaving, friction, bacteria and some skin conditions can also inflame follicles. This pattern is different from the vaginal symptoms of thrush, even if both occur in the same person.

Keep the area cool and dry, change out of sweaty clothing and pause shaving or waxing until the skin settles. Wash gently without scrubbing, do not squeeze bumps and avoid oily products that trap moisture. A clinician can decide whether an antifungal, antibacterial treatment or another approach is appropriate.

Seek an appointment when bumps are painful, draining, spreading, recurring or not improving after basic care. Prompt assessment is needed for fever, rapidly expanding redness, a large tender swelling or red streaking from the area.
