What should you know about yeast infection and itchy skin?

Vaginal thrush may inflame the vulva, causing itching, redness, swelling, small cracks, or a stinging sensation. Thick white discharge can occur, but discharge is not required. Scratching can break the skin and make burning worse. Moisture, tight clothing, fragranced products, shaving irritation, eczema, and other vaginal infections can produce similar discomfort.

The location and pattern offer clues: irritation limited to the outer skin may follow contact with a product, while internal soreness or discharge may point toward a vaginal cause. A clinician can examine the skin and test discharge when the cause is unclear.

Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and stop scented soaps, wipes, sprays, and douches. Wear loose breathable clothing and change out of damp garments. Keep fingernails short and use a cool compress rather than scratching. Avoid applying steroid, antiseptic, or home remedies inside the vagina unless prescribed.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an antifungal is appropriate before starting treatment, especially for a first episode, during pregnancy, or when the skin is cracked. Use the recommended course and seek review if symptoms do not settle.

Arrange medical assessment for severe swelling, open sores, blisters, pus, strong-smelling discharge, pain in the pelvis, fever, or pain when urinating. These features may indicate irritation, a skin condition, or another infection rather than uncomplicated thrush.

Seek urgent help if swelling makes urination difficult, pain is severe, or you feel faint or seriously unwell. A review is also needed when itching repeatedly returns or persists after antifungal treatment.

Ask whether the skin needs examination, whether a swab or other test could clarify the cause, and which product is safe for the vulva. Mention new soaps, pads, laundry products, medicines, pregnancy, and any previous episodes.
