What should you know about yeast infection after antibiotics treatment?

Vaginal thrush commonly causes intense itching, soreness, and thick white discharge that may have little smell. Antibiotics target bacteria, but they can also reduce bacteria that help keep yeast in balance. The timing after a course can make thrush plausible, but itching or discharge can also come from irritation, bacterial imbalance, or a sexually transmitted infection.

Symptoms may affect the vulva as well as the vagina. Burning during urination or sex can occur when inflamed skin is touched. A diagnosis is more reliable when a clinician considers the appearance, symptoms, pregnancy status, and any recurrence.

Contact a pharmacist or clinician about an antifungal treatment suited to your symptoms and circumstances. Treatment may be applied inside the vagina, around the vulva, or taken by mouth; pregnancy and medicine interactions affect the choice. Use the treatment for the recommended course and avoid scented washes or douching, which can irritate the area.

Keep the area dry, choose breathable underwear, and avoid scratching. Continue any antibiotic exactly as prescribed unless the prescriber changes it. Repeated episodes should be assessed rather than repeatedly self-treated.

Get medical advice promptly for fever, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, a strong-smelling or unusual discharge, sores, bleeding unrelated to your period, or feeling significantly unwell. These features are not typical of uncomplicated thrush and need another explanation considered.

Arrange assessment if this is your first episode, symptoms do not improve after treatment, or symptoms return soon. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding.
