What should you know about yeast growth on skin?

People sometimes use growth to describe spreading redness, tiny surface spots, scaling or a raised irritated patch. Yeast-related inflammation is more likely in warm, damp areas or where skin rubs together. It may itch, sting or feel tender. A discrete lump under the skin is different: boils, cysts and other lesions can feel firm or painful, while basal cell carcinoma may appear as a persistent sore, shiny bump or changing patch. Appearance and texture overlap, so a photograph or search result cannot confirm the cause.

Keep the affected area clean and dry, reduce rubbing, and pause new fragranced products that touch it. Do not squeeze, pierce or scrape a lump. If the change is a moist itchy rash, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an antifungal product fits the site and your medical history. Record when it began, whether it is enlarging, and any discharge or bleeding. A clinician can decide whether inspection, a skin sample or another test is needed.

Book a medical assessment for any growth that persists, enlarges, bleeds, crusts, changes colour, or repeatedly returns. Seek prompt care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, pus or fever. Do not delay an assessment because the surface looks like a rash; a persistent lump and an itchy patch require different evaluation.
