What should you know about xxs compression garment?

Short answer

An XXS compression garment should be fitted to your measurements and treatment needs, not chosen by size label alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the size means

XXS is a manufacturer’s label, not a universal measurement. Garments vary in length, fabric, pressure and shape, so the same label can fit differently between brands. After lymph-node surgery, radiotherapy or other cancer treatment, swelling may affect the measurements of an arm, hand, leg or trunk. A clinician or trained fitter measures the relevant areas and checks skin condition, movement and circulation before recommending a garment.

Compression applies graduated pressure to support fluid movement and may reduce heaviness or tightness. It should feel supportive rather than sharply painful, numb, cold or restrictive.

How to use it

Have the garment fitted when swelling is assessed, and follow the wearing schedule given by your lymphoedema team. Put it on smoothly, without folds or rolled edges, and check the skin after removing it. Keep the fabric clean according to its care instructions and replace it when it loses shape or becomes damaged. Do not cut, alter or share it without professional advice. Lymphoedema Therapy can help with fitting, skin care, exercises and other parts of a swelling plan.

When to stop and seek care

Remove the garment and seek prompt clinical advice if you notice new numbness, tingling, marked colour change, cold skin, increasing pain, blistering or a pressure mark that does not settle. Sudden swelling with warmth, redness, tenderness or breathlessness needs urgent assessment because it may have a cause that compression alone cannot address. Ask for a review if the garment slips, bunches, feels tighter than before or no longer fits after body changes.

Questions for your doctor

Where should I be measured? What pressure and garment length are suitable? When should I wear it and when should I remove it? How should I manage sensitive skin or a healing wound? What symptoms mean I should stop using it?

Questions people ask

Is XXS automatically the right size for a small person?

No. The correct garment depends on measured body areas, shape, swelling and the maker’s size chart.

Should compression hurt?

It should not cause severe pain, numbness, coldness or colour change; report these symptoms promptly.
