X-Ray C-Arm Fluoroscopy: What Should You Know?

A C-shaped imaging unit can move around part of your body and send X-rays to a detector. The monitor displays live images, allowing the team to check alignment, guide a needle, or confirm the position of a device while work is taking place. The machine is part of the procedure plan; it does not replace the clinician’s examination or judgement.

Tell the team if you could be pregnant, have allergies, take blood-thinning medicine, or have questions about sedation or contrast material. Follow the fasting and medication instructions provided for your appointment. You may need to remove jewellery or clothing near the imaging area. During imaging, stay in the requested position and follow breathing or movement instructions. Staff use shielding and keep exposure as low as reasonably practical for the procedure.

After a procedure, follow the specific discharge instructions you receive. Contact the care team for increasing pain, bleeding or swelling at an access site, fever, new weakness, or a change in sensation. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden chest symptoms, or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms. The appropriate response depends on the procedure and any sedation or injection used.

Ask what the C-arm will guide, whether contrast or sedation is planned, and how you will be positioned. Clarify expected aftercare, activity limits, warning signs, and who to contact if symptoms change.
