What should you know about writing on skin hives?

Writing on the skin can cause raised, itchy lines called dermatographism, a form of hives triggered by scratching or pressure. The marks often follow the path of a fingernail, clothing seam, towel, or other contact. They may fade as the skin settles, but repeated episodes can be uncomfortable and may need assessment if they are persistent or accompanied by swelling.

Dermatographism is a type of physical urticaria, also called hives. Rubbing or scratching stimulates skin cells to release chemical signals, which can widen tiny blood vessels and draw fluid into the surrounding tissue. The result is a temporary raised line or welt. Itching may encourage more scratching, creating a cycle of new marks.

Heat, sweating, tight clothing, friction, emotional stress, and dry or irritated skin can make the reaction easier to trigger. This pattern is different from a contagious rash. It can occur with other forms of hives, and deeper swelling around the lips, eyelids, hands, or throat is described as angioedema.

Try to reduce friction while the skin is reactive. Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and a plain moisturiser. Choose loose, breathable clothing and pat the skin dry instead of rubbing it. Keeping nails short can limit injury when itching starts.

A clinician or pharmacist can explain whether an oral antihistamine is suitable for your symptoms and health history. Do not combine products or exceed the labelled directions without advice. Make a note of triggers, how quickly the lines appear, how long they last, and whether medicines, foods, infections, or new skin products were involved. Photographs taken soon after the marks develop can help during an appointment.

Seek emergency help immediately if hives occur with swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms can signal a serious allergic reaction, even if the skin marks seem mild.

Arrange medical advice when the reaction keeps returning, interferes with sleep or daily activities, lasts longer than expected, or appears with fever, bruising, pain, or a new medicine. A clinician can check whether this is dermatographism, another type of hives, or a different skin condition.
