Wrap for Eczema: How Wet and Dry Wraps Are Used

A wrap for eczema can hold moisturizer against irritated skin and reduce scratching, but it should follow a clinician's plan. Wet wraps use a damp, soft layer beneath a dry layer; dry wraps use clothing or tubular bandages to shield the skin without adding moisture.

A wrap can improve contact between emollient and dry, inflamed skin, limit rubbing, and make night-time scratching harder. It is generally considered for selected flares of atopic dermatitis, especially when itching, cracking, or sleep disruption is prominent. Wraps do not remove the underlying tendency to eczema. Damp coverings can also trap heat and moisture, so the material, fit, duration, and body area matter.

Apply the prescribed or recommended moisturizer to clean skin, then place the damp layer only as directed and cover it with a dry layer. Use soft, breathable fabric without tight pressure; leave the face, neck, or other sensitive areas uncovered unless specifically instructed. Replace wet material when it becomes dry, cold, or soiled, and wash reusable garments as directed. Stop if burning, numbness, worsening redness, or discomfort develops. Do not place a wrap over infected or crusted skin without medical advice, and do not add medicine beneath it unless prescribed for that purpose.

Contact a clinician if the flare is rapidly worsening, develops yellow crusting, oozing, increasing warmth, swelling, or tenderness, or does not settle with the agreed plan. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, extensive blistering, severe pain, or feeling very unwell. Recurrent night itching, deep cracks, or darkening after inflammation may need a review of the diagnosis and treatment plan.
