Working Out Through DOMS: What You Should Know

Short answer
Working out through DOMS can be reasonable when soreness is mild, but reduce intensity and stop if pain changes your movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Keep movement gentle and avoid pain-altering form
What DOMS feels like
Delayed onset muscle soreness usually appears after a new, harder, or unfamiliar workout rather than during the activity itself. Muscles may feel tender, stiff, weak, or uncomfortable when you sit down, climb stairs, or lengthen them. This differs from a sudden sharp pain, a pop, marked swelling, bruising, or pain focused at one spot, which can fit a muscle strain or another injury. Muscle soreness after exercise can affect the muscles used in the session and often settles as they recover.
How to adjust your workout
Choose gentle movement, such as easy walking, mobility exercises, or light work for a different muscle group. Lower the load, speed, range, and number of repetitions, and allow longer rests. A warm-up can show whether movement feels easier; it should not be used to push through worsening pain. Hydration, sleep, and regular meals support recovery. Heat or cold therapy may provide short-term comfort, while sports massage can feel helpful for some people, but neither should mask pain so you can train hard.
When soreness needs medical attention
Arrange an assessment if pain is severe, keeps worsening, limits ordinary movement, or does not begin improving with rest and lighter activity. Seek urgent care for major swelling, unusual weakness, dark urine, fever, numbness, or a limb that looks deformed. A clinician can distinguish DOMS from a muscle strain and advise when to return to full training.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask which activities are suitable today, how to progress your workload, and whether the painful area suggests a strain rather than DOMS. You can also ask whether your technique, recovery routine, or training schedule needs adjustment.

Questions people ask
Should I train the same muscles with DOMS?
Use easy movement only if symptoms are mild and your technique remains normal; otherwise rest that muscle group.
Can stretching cure DOMS?
Gentle mobility may ease stiffness, but forceful stretching is not a cure and can aggravate irritated tissue.
