Word recognition hearing test: what it shows

During the test, you listen to recorded or spoken words, usually through headphones, and repeat what you hear. The clinician compares the words presented with the words you identify correctly. This helps separate reduced sound detection from difficulty making speech clear, especially in conversation or when background noise competes with speech.

A result is interpreted alongside the rest of your hearing assessment, the ear examination, your hearing history and any one-sided change. Earwax can muffle sound, while inner-ear conditions such as Meniere's disease may involve hearing changes with other symptoms. A score on its own does not identify the cause.

Tell the clinician which ear feels different, when you first noticed a change, and whether voices seem audible but indistinct. Bring a list of medicines and mention ringing, dizziness, ear fullness, recent noise exposure or ear infections. If you use hearing devices, ask whether testing should include them and how the result may guide adjustment or further assessment.

Keep the result with your previous audiograms if you have them. A change over time can be more useful than viewing one result in isolation.

Arrange urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, a sudden major change in one ear, new severe dizziness, facial weakness, or hearing change after a head injury. Book a routine appointment if speech has gradually become less clear, you need frequent repetition, or ear blockage persists. Do not put cotton buds or other objects into the ear canal to remove wax.

Ask which ear was affected, whether the word result matches your pure-tone hearing test, whether your ear canal is clear, and whether repeat testing or referral would help. You can also ask what listening strategies may make conversations easier while the cause is being assessed.
