What should you know about throat cancer symptoms in women?

Throat cancer may present with a change in voice, pain or difficulty when swallowing, a persistent sore throat, a lump in the neck or throat, ear pain without an ear problem, unexplained weight loss, or coughing. A hoarse voice can result from many non-cancer causes, including infection, reflux, or voice strain; it does not by itself diagnose throat cancer.

The throat includes areas behind the mouth and nose and around the voice box. The site of a problem affects the symptoms and tests chosen. A clinician may examine the mouth and neck, inspect the throat with a small camera, and arrange scans or a tissue sample when needed.

Book an appointment with a primary-care clinician or ear, nose, and throat specialist for symptoms that persist, recur, or interfere with eating, speaking, or breathing. Note when symptoms began, whether swallowing solids or liquids is affected, and any voice, neck, ear, or weight changes.

Assessment may lead to observation, referral, imaging, or a biopsy. If throat cancer is diagnosed, treatment may include radiotherapy, tumour removal surgery, chemotherapy, or a combination chosen for the tumour’s site and extent.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, coughing blood, or choking. Arrange prompt medical review for new persistent hoarseness, worsening swallowing difficulty, or a neck lump.

Ask which part of the throat may be involved, what examination or scan is needed, whether a biopsy is appropriate, and how symptoms can be managed while assessment continues.
