Short answer

Wide excision surgery removes visible endometriosis and a margin of nearby tissue, usually through keyhole surgery when appropriate.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the procedure means

During laparoscopic excision, a surgeon uses small abdominal incisions and a camera to inspect the pelvis. The affected deposits are carefully cut away rather than simply treated at the surface. The exact operation depends on where endometriosis is found and whether it involves organs such as the bowel, bladder or reproductive organs. A diagnostic laparoscopy may be used first to clarify the location and extent of disease. The aim is to remove disease that can be safely reached while protecting healthy structures. It may help symptoms such as pelvic pain or pain during sex, but symptoms can have more than one cause and improvement is not guaranteed.

Preparing and recovering

Before surgery, discuss medicines, allergies, pregnancy plans and any previous abdominal operations. Ask whether additional specialists may be involved if disease is close to the bowel or bladder. Afterward, expect tiredness, bloating or soreness around the incisions for a while. Follow the discharge instructions about bathing, wound care, activity and pain relief. Gentle walking can support recovery, while strenuous exercise and sex should wait until your surgical team says they are appropriate. Keep follow-up appointments so the findings, pathology if tissue was removed, and next treatment options can be reviewed.

When to seek care

Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, worsening rather than settling pain, repeated vomiting, increasing redness or discharge from an incision, difficulty passing urine, heavy vaginal bleeding, chest pain or shortness of breath. Sudden severe abdominal pain or feeling faint needs urgent assessment. Seek advice even if you are unsure whether a symptom is related to the operation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which areas will be treated, whether the operation may involve another specialist, what symptoms it is intended to address, and what recovery restrictions apply. You can also ask how findings will be shared and what options remain if pain continues.

Questions people ask

Is wide excision the same as ablation?

No. Excision cuts out visible disease, while ablation treats the surface with energy; your surgeon can explain which method fits the findings.

Will surgery cure pelvic pain?

It may reduce pain caused by endometriosis, but pain can have several contributors and may persist or return.
