Why is time-lapse embryo imaging used in blastocyst culture?

Blastocyst culture keeps embryos in the laboratory for several days while the embryology team watches for continued development toward the blastocyst stage. A time-lapse system combines an incubator with a camera. It captures images at set intervals, creating a record of changes such as cell division, the formation of a fluid-filled cavity, and expansion or collapse of the developing blastocyst.

With conventional observation, an embryo may need to be taken out briefly for viewing. Time-lapse imaging can reduce the need for those interruptions and gives the team a sequence of observations rather than isolated snapshots. The images may help embryologists compare developmental patterns when discussing which embryos may be suitable for transfer or cryopreservation. The system is an observation aid; it does not change the embryo or guarantee implantation or pregnancy.

Ask your fertility clinic whether its time-lapse system is used for every embryo or only in selected cases, and how the images are incorporated into the laboratory review. The clinic can also explain how embryo assessment, genetic testing when offered, and your treatment plan are considered together. You may be able to view images or receive a developmental update, although practices differ between clinics.
