Why is thermoplastic used in scoliosis bracing?

A brace maker warms the sheet and forms it around a person’s trunk using measurements and the prescribed correction plan. Once cool, the material becomes a shaped shell. Its firmness helps guide pressure to selected areas while leaving room for expansion and breathing. A close fit also helps the brace remain in the intended position as the wearer moves. The shape, padding, openings, and trim matter as much as the material itself; they are adjusted for comfort, growth, clothing, and the clinician’s goals.

Follow the wearing schedule and skin-check routine provided by the orthotist. Wear the recommended thin clothing layer, keep the skin dry, and look for persistent redness, rubbing, blisters, or pressure marks after removal. Do not heat, cut, or reshape the brace at home. Attend planned fitting reviews, especially when growth, weight, pain, or posture changes affect the fit. Bracing is one part of scoliosis management and does not replace follow-up assessment.

Contact the orthotist promptly if the brace causes ongoing pain, numbness, breathing difficulty, skin breakdown, or a sharp pressure point. Seek medical advice for sudden severe back pain, new weakness, or a major change in balance. A brace that becomes loose, cracked, or difficult to fasten may no longer provide the planned support.
