Why is suture anchor used in meniscus repair?

The meniscus is a curved pad of cartilage in the knee that helps distribute load and support smooth movement. Some tears occur near an attachment or in a position where stitches need a firm point of purchase in bone. The surgeon places an anchor in a selected area, passes the attached sutures through the meniscus, and secures the tissue in its intended position.

An anchor does not make the tissue heal immediately. Blood supply, tear pattern, tissue quality, knee alignment, and protection after surgery all affect healing. The device and suture arrangement are chosen for the specific tear and the surgeon’s technique.

Follow the prescribed limits on weight bearing, knee bending, and brace use; these instructions can be different from those after meniscus trimming. Use crutches as taught and complete the early exercises recommended by your care team. Do not test the knee with deep squats, twisting, or sport before clearance. Keep follow-up visits so the team can adjust movement and strengthening as your knee recovers.

Call the surgical team for increasing redness or drainage, fever, worsening swelling, calf pain, or pain that is not controlled by the agreed plan. Urgent assessment is needed after a fall if the knee suddenly locks, changes shape, or loses movement. New shortness of breath or chest pain requires emergency help.
