Why is a pressure plate gait scanner used in gait analysis?

As you walk or run across the plate, sensors record pressure and timing beneath different parts of the foot. The clinician can examine contact patterns, balance between the feet, loading through the heel and forefoot, and how your step changes with speed or footwear. These findings can add objective detail to a physical examination and may help explain discomfort, repeated overload or an uneven walking pattern.

The result describes foot-ground interaction; it does not by itself identify the cause of pain. Hip, knee, ankle strength, joint movement, nerves, footwear and technique can all influence gait, so the readings are interpreted alongside your history and examination.

Wear comfortable clothing and bring the shoes you normally use for the activity that causes concern. You may be asked to walk several passes barefoot and in shoes, and sometimes at different speeds. Try to move naturally rather than deliberately correcting your steps. Tell the clinician about pain, previous injuries, orthotics and the sport or work demands you want to return to.

Seek prompt assessment for a new inability to walk, rapidly worsening limp, marked swelling, or pain after an injury. Urgent care is appropriate for a cold or pale foot, new loss of feeling or strength, severe calf swelling, or chest pain or breathlessness.
