Why is platelet-rich plasma used in PRP for hair loss?

PRP is prepared from a small sample of your own blood. After processing, the platelet-rich portion is placed into selected areas of the scalp. Platelets are better known for helping the body respond to injury, but they also carry growth-related signals. In the scalp, these signals may encourage a less active follicle to function more actively and may support the local environment around the follicle.

The treatment is intended for particular patterns of thinning, not every cause of hair loss. Results can differ with the reason for shedding, follicle health, age, medical history and the treatment plan. PRP does not replace diagnosis, since sudden shedding, scalp inflammation or patchy loss may need a different approach.

Ask the clinician to identify the pattern and likely cause of your hair loss before injections are planned. Share medicines, bleeding problems, scalp conditions and previous treatments. You may be advised to arrive with a clean scalp and to follow specific instructions about medicines that can increase bruising; do not change prescribed medicine without medical advice.

During the appointment, the scalp is cleaned and the prepared PRP is injected into the chosen areas. Tenderness, swelling or small bruises can occur afterward. Follow the clinic’s washing, exercise and product instructions, and keep follow-up visits so the response can be assessed over time.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, redness, warmth or swelling is worsening rather than settling, or if drainage or fever develops. Seek urgent medical help for severe swelling, trouble breathing, fainting or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Report new rapidly spreading scalp changes or sudden heavy shedding, because these may need assessment beyond the PRP plan.
