Why is a PEEK spinal cage used in cervical fusion?

PEEK is a strong medical polymer shaped into a small spacer. In a cervical fusion, the cage sits where a damaged disc was removed. Its height helps preserve space between the vertebrae, while its internal opening can contain bone graft. The graft is intended to bridge the adjacent bones; the cage provides structure while that process develops.

The cage may be used with a plate, screws or other fixation depending on the level and surgical approach. Its radiolucent quality can make the surrounding bone easier to assess on follow-up imaging, although the surgeon chooses imaging and implants for the individual case.

Follow instructions about neck movement, wound care, medicines and return to work. Swallowing discomfort or a hoarse voice can occur after an anterior neck approach, but your team should know if these symptoms are worsening or affecting fluids.
