Why is oxytocin used in vaginal delivery?

Oxytocin is a hormone involved in uterine contraction. During labour, a synthetic form may be given through a vein if contractions are not supporting progress. After the baby and placenta are delivered, it may be used to make the uterus firm and help control bleeding from the placental attachment site.

The midwife or doctor checks your contractions, pulse and blood pressure, and may monitor the baby's heart rate while oxytocin is used before birth. The amount can be adjusted as your response changes.

Tell the maternity team about heart problems, high blood pressure, medicines or a previous reaction to oxytocin. During labour, report contractions that feel continuous, unusually close together, or different from what you were told to expect.

After delivery, let staff know about increasing bleeding, dizziness, worsening pain or feeling unwell. Follow advice about bladder care, movement and postnatal observation.

Call the maternity team urgently for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain, severe abdominal pain or a sudden reduction in your baby's movements before birth. After discharge, seek help for rapidly increasing bleeding, fever, worsening pain or a wound or vaginal discharge that concerns you.

Ask whether oxytocin is being considered for labour, after birth, or both; how it will be monitored; which pain-relief options are available; and what signs should prompt urgent help at home.
