Why are oral iron salts used in iron supplementation?

Short answer

Oral iron salts are used in iron supplementation because they provide absorbable iron that the body can use to make haemoglobin and replenish iron stores over time.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What iron does in the body

Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen. Low iron may be found during assessment of tiredness, reduced exercise tolerance, dizziness, paleness, or other concerns, but these symptoms can have many causes. A clinician may use blood tests and your history to establish whether iron deficiency is present and why it developed.

Different iron salts contain iron in forms the gut can absorb. Replacing iron is only part of care: the underlying reason for low iron may also need attention, such as dietary intake, blood loss, absorption problems, or increased requirements during particular stages of life.

Taking oral iron

Take oral iron exactly as prescribed or directed. Ask whether it should be taken with food, since food may make it easier on the stomach but can affect absorption for some products. Tea, coffee, calcium-containing products, antacids, and certain medicines can interfere with absorption, so ask a pharmacist about spacing doses.

Nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea, and darker stools can occur. Do not take more than advised and keep iron products out of reach of children, because an accidental overdose can be dangerous. Oral Iron Salts gives more product-focused information, and Iron Supplementation explains the treatment plan.

When to seek medical help

Get urgent medical help if a child or adult may have taken too much iron. Seek urgent assessment for black tar-like stools, vomiting blood, severe chest pain, fainting, or severe shortness of breath. Contact your clinician if side effects make it hard to continue, symptoms worsen, or you have not discussed the cause of suspected low iron.

Questions to ask

Ask which iron salt and dose are appropriate, how to fit it around your food and other medicines, and when your response should be reviewed. Ask what tests or investigations are needed to identify the reason your iron is low rather than simply continuing supplements.

Why can iron tablets darken stools?

Darker stools can occur with oral iron. Tell a clinician urgently about black tar-like stools, especially if you feel unwell or have other bleeding symptoms.

Should I stop iron if it upsets my stomach?

Contact the clinician or pharmacist who advised it. They can discuss ways to reduce side effects or whether a different plan is needed.
