Why is an Nd:YAG laser used in laser treatment for nail fungus?

The laser sends pulses into the nail and nearby tissue. The clinician aims to create a controlled thermal effect in an area that topical products may reach with difficulty. The visible nail cannot instantly become clear because healthy nail must grow forward from the nail root. A diagnosis should be confirmed before treatment, since trauma, psoriasis, and other nail conditions can look similar to fungus.

Laser treatment may be offered alone or alongside another approach, depending on the nail, surrounding skin, medical history, and test results. Thickened or crumbly nail material may need trimming or filing as advised. Treating shoes, socks, and coexisting foot skin infection may also be discussed to reduce reinfection risk.

Keep nails clean and dry, do not share nail tools, and follow instructions about trimming before a session. Tell the clinician about diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, medicines, pregnancy, and any wound around the nail. After treatment, watch the skin around the nail, use prescribed products exactly as directed, and attend review so growth and possible recurrence can be assessed.

Contact the clinic for increasing pain, blistering, marked redness, drainage, swelling, or a wound that does not settle. Seek prompt medical advice for fever or spreading redness, especially if you have diabetes or reduced circulation. A dark streak, sudden nail separation, or a changing mark under one nail also deserves assessment rather than being assumed to be fungus.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, whether the laser will be combined with topical or oral treatment, how the nail will be prepared, and what improvement can be judged while the nail grows. Ask how to protect other nails and when a persistent or recurrent change needs testing again.
