Why is my period starting and stopping?

Light bleeding can pause before the remaining lining leaves the uterus. Irregular ovulation is common during adolescence and the transition toward menopause, and can also occur with polycystic ovary syndrome. Starting, missing, or changing hormonal contraception may alter the pattern. Pregnancy, infection, thyroid problems, fibroids, and polyps are additional possibilities.

The pattern alone cannot identify the cause. Record the dates, whether bleeding is brown or bright red, pain, clots, discharge, contraception, and any chance of pregnancy. This gives a clinician a clearer picture than a single day of bleeding.

Arrange a routine appointment if this pattern repeats, lasts longer than expected, follows sex, or is different from your usual cycle. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. Keep a simple bleeding diary and do not stop prescribed contraception without advice. A clinician may recommend an examination or tests based on your symptoms.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, faintness, marked weakness, breathlessness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. New bleeding after menopause also needs prompt assessment, even if it is light.

Ask whether your pattern suggests irregular ovulation, a contraception effect, infection, or a structural cause. Ask which tests are appropriate and how long to monitor the pattern before returning.
