Why is low-dose aspirin used in antenatal care package?

Aspirin affects platelets, which are blood cells involved in clotting. In selected pregnancies, this action may support blood flow through the placenta and lower the likelihood of pre-eclampsia or related problems. It is a preventive medicine, not a treatment for every pregnancy and not a substitute for blood-pressure checks or ultrasound monitoring. The reason for prescribing it depends on your medical history, pregnancy history and current pregnancy.

Take it only when your maternity clinician has prescribed it, at the dose and time they gave you. Do not start ordinary aspirin, change the dose or stop treatment without advice. Tell the team about aspirin sensitivity, asthma triggered by painkillers, stomach ulcers, bleeding problems and any medicines or supplements you use. Keep attending antenatal appointments so your blood pressure, urine and the baby's growth can be assessed.

Seek urgent maternity advice for severe headache, changes in vision, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain or reduced fetal movement. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether you take aspirin. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, collapse or trouble breathing.
